The best free resume builder in India is the one that still lets you download your resume after you have finished it. Many do not. They let you build for an hour, then ask for a card at the download button.
I built ApplyCove, one of the eight builders compared here, so check my rows against the sources too. Our own page is the free resume builder. The other seven get a fair hearing below, including where each one is the better pick.
Free usually ends at the download button
Two of the eight work the same way. You build the whole resume without paying, press download, and find that the free plan hands you a text file. Zety’s pricing page (Wayback copy, 22 September 2026) says its free Basic Package downloads “TXT format only”, and Resume.io’s says “Downloads only in TXT format”. PDF and Word sit behind a paid package that starts as a trial.
Zety’s trial is 14 days at US$1.95, after which it auto-renews at US$25.95 every 4 weeks. Resume.io’s is 7 days at US$2.95, then US$29.95 every 4 weeks. Both list prices in US dollars on the pages I read. I did not check what Indian visitors are charged in rupees, so treat these as the listed prices and check the amount at checkout.
A trial that renews is not dishonest, but it is not free either, and the cancelling is on you. The cheaper habit is to read the download rules before you spend an hour typing.
There is a second cost. The more hours you spend on the application, the fewer you have for the part that gets you hired: interview prep, mock rounds, the practice problem you keep postponing. An evening lost at 11pm to a builder that paywalls the PDF is an evening not spent on any of those.
The smaller limits matter too. Canva puts a watermark on premium elements, Novoresume’s free plan stops at one page, and Overleaf asks you to write LaTeX. The table has all of it.
How I compared them
Eight builders, eight things, one date. I read each vendor’s own public pages on 11 October 2026: pricing, FAQ, help centre and feature pages. They are listed in alphabetical order in the tables, the tool sections and the AI list, ApplyCove included, not in order of merit. The eight things are:
- Whether a free account can download a PDF.
- Whether the free download carries a watermark.
- Whether the vendor offers ATS-friendly single-column templates.
- Whether you can export Word (.docx).
- Whether there is AI writing help.
- Whether the AI costs extra.
- Whether the education section has a dedicated score field, where a CGPA or percentage goes. The same rule applies to every builder: a field in the builder, stated on a public page. Typing a grade into free text does not count.
- Whether you can edit on a phone.
The ground rules:
- A vendor’s claim is a claim. When a vendor says its templates are ATS-friendly, the table says “says”. I did not run any competitor’s templates through a parser. The one ATS claim I make myself is for ApplyCove, and it is tested by us (our own pdf.js self-test, not an independent audit). The two-column study describes the method and its limits.
- “Not stated” is not “No”. If a vendor’s public pages are silent, the table says “Not stated”, even when the answer is probably no. A few values are inferences from something the vendor did say, and the sections below quote it.
- I say how a page was read. Zety’s site timed out, so I read the Wayback copy dated 22 September 2026 and matched it against live search results for the same page. Naukri’s site returned a 403 to a direct fetch, so its facts come from live search results for those pages. Zety’s AI and phone-editing pages were also read via search results.
Prices and free tiers change. Open the vendor’s page before you pay.

| Reactive Resume | Not stated: 17 templates, each exporting “a text-based PDF with the words in reading order”, none described as single-column or ATS-specific | Yes, only with your own API key | No: there is no paid tier, so any AI cost is your own provider’s bill | Not stated |
| Resume.io | Says yes: Word templates with “a clean, single-column structure that stays ATS-safe” | Yes, free users can “test our AI writing tools” | Yes, “Unlimited AI help” is on paid plans | Not stated |
| Zety | Says yes: all templates designed to be ATS-friendly, with single-column designs such as Diamond and Influx. Also has two-column ones | Yes (marketed as a “Free AI Resume Builder”, read via search results) | Not stated: no AI limit published, but the finished resume needs Pro to download as PDF or Word | Yes, in a mobile browser (read via search results); no app named |
Education score field (CGPA or percentage)
| Builder | Dedicated score or grade field in the education section |
|---|---|
| ApplyCove | Yes, a Score field that takes a CGPA or percentage as typed text |
| Canva | Not stated: a free-form design canvas, no education field described |
| Naukri360 | Not stated: it can pull details from your Naukri profile, but a score field is not described |
| Novoresume | Not stated |
| Overleaf | Not stated: you write the LaTeX source, so a grade is typed as text |
| Reactive Resume | Not stated: education fields are not described on the public page |
| Resume.io | Not stated |
| Zety | Not stated |
ApplyCove’s answer is from our own builder; we have not inspected the other editors. It is also not publicly documented, so it is the one row where my claim cannot be checked from a web page. “Not stated” for the others means their public pages do not say.
ApplyCove: free export, with AI on credits
This is the one I built, so read it with that in mind. A free account, no card, gets all 17 templates, editing, themes, and export to PDF, Word and plain text with no watermark. Fourteen templates are single-column and marked ATS-safe. Vertex, Slate and Harbor are labelled Two-column and not marked ATS-safe. The label follows the layout, and our own pdf.js self-test, not an independent audit, is what backs the ATS-safe claim for the 14 single-column templates.
Good for: someone who wants a PDF and a Word file from one place with no trial, and a place for a CGPA or percentage in the education section. The editor works on a phone screen.
Watch out for: the AI parts are the paid part. AI bullets, AI summary and Tailor to job use Pro credits. The AI bullets leave [X] placeholders for numbers instead of inventing results, which the post on resume bullet points with numbers explains. If you want a lot of design freedom, a design tool gives you more room than a form-based builder. None of its templates has a photo slot, so if a role asks for a photo, photo on a resume in India covers when it is expected and how to add one.
You can open the ApplyCove builder with a free account.
Canva: best for design, with two limits you will meet
Canva is the strongest pick here when the resume is something a person will look at. The Free plan exports PDF, JPG and PNG, there are iOS and Android apps, and Magic Write covers AI writing help.
Good for: designers, portfolios, and a PDF you hand to a recruiter, a referral or a hiring manager.
Watch out for: two limits. Canva’s help page says premium elements carry a watermark on a Free account, though a design that uses only free elements downloads without one. And Word is not simple: DOCX download is for Canva Docs, and a design becomes a Doc with Transform into Doc, which needs Pro, Teams, Education or Nonprofits. Free accounts also get up to 20 uses a month of Standard or Premium AI tools, shared. Canva does not say which resume templates are single-column or parser-tested, so is a Canva resume ATS-friendly covers how to test one before you upload.
Naukri360 resume builder: inside the portal you already use
Naukri’s own resume builder can pull details from your Naukri profile and says you can download “in Word or PDF for free”. It also offers AI suggestions for the summary and key sections, and its template pages are titled “Free ATS-Friendly Resume Format” (self-described).
Good for: people already on Naukri who want a resume matching their profile.
Watch out for: Pro adds “unlimited downloads”, so how many free downloads you get is not stated. Naukri’s pages returned a 403 to a direct fetch on 11 October 2026, so these facts come from live search results for the templates page. Column layout, watermarks, Pro pricing and AI limits are not stated.
Novoresume: a PDF on the free plan, but one page
Novoresume’s home page says “The free plan includes a professional template, AI content suggestions, and PDF download”, and its PDF FAQ answers “Yes, on every plan.” It describes its templates as “ATS-friendly” and “reviewed by real recruiters” (self-described), and the editor runs in a mobile browser.
Good for: a fresher with a one-page resume who wants a PDF at no cost.
Watch out for: the Basic plan is one page and 8 templates, and per the pricing page “downloading a document with Premium features is not possible in the Basic account”. Word export is not stated. Its pricing FAQ says “all the documents are saved as PDFs”, which suggests there is no Word file, but Novoresume does not say so directly. Some older Novoresume pages say free exports are .txt. I used the live home page. Premium lists “No Watermark/Branding”; the Basic line does not say either way.
Overleaf: best for people who already write LaTeX
Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor, not a form-based builder. You write the source and compile your own PDF.
Good for: engineers, researchers and academics who are comfortable with code and want exact control. Its docs give “Download as PDF” from the File menu with no plan condition stated, and File > Download > Export as Word (.docx), converted with Pandoc, which keeps structure but not styling. Both are inferences from the docs, not statements about a free plan. The free plan has 5 AI uses a day.
Watch out for: CV templates are community-made and Overleaf makes no ATS claim, so parsing depends on the template and packages you pick. It runs in mobile browsers, though Overleaf says “there are some limitations when using Overleaf on a mobile device or tablet.”
Reactive Resume: open source, no paid tier
Reactive Resume’s home page says “There’s no paid tier”. It is open source (MIT), funded by donations, and can be self-hosted. It exports PDF, Word (DOCX), Markdown and JSON.
Good for: someone who wants no paywall, or who wants to self-host.
Watch out for: its 17 templates each export “a text-based PDF with the words in reading order”, but none is described as single-column or ATS-specific. AI works only with your own API key, so any cost is your provider’s bill. The page says “no ads and no paywall” and does not mention watermarks, so I have left that as not stated.
Resume.io: free to build, paid to download
Resume.io describes Word templates with “a clean, single-column structure that stays ATS-safe” (self-described), and free users can “test our AI writing tools”.
Good for: someone who is willing to pay for the download and wants Word templates the vendor describes as single-column.
Watch out for: the free plan reads “Downloads only in TXT format”. The paid route starts with a 7-day trial at US$2.95, then auto-renews at US$29.95 every 4 weeks, per the pricing page. By its help article, DOCX exists on 8 named templates, and on the free version you can only download TXT, so I have marked Word as paid, an inference. Whether the builder edits on a phone is not stated: its blog says the “mobile site offers a selection of resume templates”, which is not the same thing.
Zety: free to build, TXT only to download
Zety describes its templates as designed to be ATS-friendly, including single-column designs such as Diamond and Influx (self-described). It also offers two-column templates. It markets itself as a “Free AI Resume Builder”.
Good for: someone who is ready to pay for the download and wants templates the vendor describes as ATS-friendly.
Watch out for: the free Basic Package downloads “TXT format only”. PDF and Word need the Pro package: a 14-day trial at US$1.95 that auto-renews at US$25.95 every 4 weeks, per its pricing page. That page timed out on 11 October 2026, so I read the Wayback copy dated 22 September and matched it against live search results. Zety publishes no AI limit. The catch is the paid download: the finished resume still needs Pro for PDF or Word.
Best free AI resume builder in India: what is free
If free AI help is what you want, here is what each builder’s pages say, as of 11 October 2026:
- ApplyCove: the AI features (AI bullets, AI summary, Tailor to job) are Pro, on credits. The rest of the builder is free.
- Canva: Magic Write, with up to 20 uses a month of Standard or Premium AI tools on a Free account, shared.
- Naukri360: AI suggestions for the summary and key sections. Limits and Pro pricing are not stated.
- Novoresume: the free plan includes “AI content suggestions”. Advanced AI is on Pro.
- Overleaf: the free plan has 5 AI uses a day across available AI tools.
- Reactive Resume: AI works only with your own API key, so any cost is your provider’s bill.
- Resume.io: free users can test its AI writing tools. “Unlimited AI help” is on paid plans.
- Zety: marketed as a free AI builder, with no AI limit published, but the PDF or Word download still needs Pro.
Whichever AI you let draft your bullets, action verbs for your resume has a swap table for weak and AI-sounding words.
Which one to use, by situation
- Fresher, on a phone, wants a free PDF: ApplyCove, Novoresume and Canva all say you can edit on a phone, and all three offer a PDF at no cost, with Novoresume limited to one page and Canva watermarking premium elements. Zety also edits in a mobile browser, but its PDF is paid. The guide to making a resume on your phone covers the apps.
- Designer, or a resume a person will read: Canva.
- Engineer comfortable with LaTeX: Overleaf.
- Experienced hire who needs Word without a trial: ApplyCove, Reactive Resume, Overleaf (inferred) or Naukri360 (says so, free count not stated). Canva, Zety and Resume.io put Word behind a paid plan.
- Wants no paywall at all: Reactive Resume.
Whichever you pick, the ATS question stays open. Check the file you exported, not the editor view. The free ATS resume checker post lists the tools, and the paste-into-Notepad test in the Canva post takes two minutes. If you are a fresher, resume format for freshers covers one page versus two.
Once the file is clean, resume bullet points with numbers is where the words get better, and how long a resume should be is the question a builder cannot answer for you. The skills section guide covers what to list and how many.
When you do not need a builder at all
If you already have a clean single-column Word resume that parses, you do not need any builder, ours included. Paste all its text into Notepad. If your name comes first and each job sits next to its own dates and bullets, upload it and spend the evening on something else.
A builder earns its place in three cases: your current file fails that test, you are starting from nothing, or you need a PDF and a Word file from one source. If you only want one specific role at one specific company, you need even less. A tailored version of the file you have is enough. We are not the right tool for an audience of one.
