To make a resume on mobile, open the free Google Docs or Word app, start a blank document, type a single-column resume using standard headings, and export it as a PDF. That file will parse cleanly on Naukri and in company applicant tracking systems. Avoid design-heavy templates and never upload a screenshot. Below are the steps, a skeleton you can type straight into your phone, and an honest note on where a phone stops being enough.
A lot of people in India apply for jobs only from a phone. That is not a handicap for the resume itself. A good resume is plain text in a sensible order, and a phone can produce plain text in a sensible order. What a phone is bad at is fiddly layout, which is exactly the part you should be avoiding anyway.
Our builder on a phone
The free resume builder works on a phone screen. The form fills the screen, and a Preview button opens the page so you can check how it looks. On a laptop the preview sits beside the form and updates as you type. It needs a free account, no card, and the PDF has no watermark.
So the realistic mobile workflow, if you want the builder, is to write your content using the skeleton below, then paste it in and download the PDF. For a long first draft a laptop is still easier, but you do not need one. The Docs and Word route below is also completely fine.
How to make a resume on mobile, step by step
Step 1: Write the content first, in plain text
Do not open a template yet. Open your notes app and type the content in this order. Writing and formatting at the same time on a small screen is how you end up with neither done well.
FULL NAME
City | Phone | Email | LinkedIn or GitHub URL
HEADLINE
Role you want | 2-3 core skills
SUMMARY
Two sentences: degree or current role, strongest skills, one result.
EDUCATION (freshers put this here; experienced people move it to the end)
Degree, Branch, Institution, Year, CGPA as printed
EXPERIENCE or PROJECTS
Title, Company or Project, Month Year - Month Year
- What you did, with a number
- What changed because of it
SKILLS
Plain list, comma separated
CERTIFICATIONS
Exact names
Freshers stuck on the summary line can borrow a structure from career objective examples for freshers. Experienced readers should follow the section order in resume format for experienced professionals instead.
Step 2: Format it in Google Docs or Word, single column
Install Google Docs or Microsoft Word (both free for this on phones). Start a blank document and paste your text in. Then:
- Make your name bold and slightly larger.
- Make section headings bold. Use the standard names: Summary, Education, Experience, Projects, Skills.
- Use the app’s bullet list for your bullet points.
- Keep everything in one column. No tables, no text boxes, no columns.
- Put your contact details in the page body, not in a header.
Blank beats a template here. Many ready-made templates, in any app, use two columns or tables to look polished, and those are the layouts that applicant tracking systems most often read in the wrong order. How to make your resume ATS-friendly explains why.
Step 3: Export as PDF and test the text
In Google Docs, the option sits under the menu’s Share and export section. In Word, use share or export and choose PDF. The exact labels shift a little between Android, iPhone and app versions, so look for “PDF” rather than a specific path.
Then open the PDF on your phone and long-press a word. If it highlights as text, you are fine. If nothing selects, the file is an image of a resume, and software sees an empty page. This is the most important check in the whole process.
Step 4: Name the file and upload it
Rename it Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf. Not Document1.pdf, not resume_final_2.pdf. Recruiters download dozens of files a day and yours should be findable.
In the Naukri app, go to your profile, find the resume section, and upload or update from your phone’s files. On LinkedIn, you can upload it when you apply. Upload the PDF itself, never a screenshot of it.
Step 5: Check how software reads it
Run the PDF through the free ATS resume checker, which needs no login. It shows what a parser actually extracts and scores the file out of 100. What an ATS score means explains what the number is built from.
Apps and methods, ranked for a resume that parses
| Method | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Google Docs app, blank document | Best free phone option. Clean PDF, single column by default |
| Word app, blank document | Equally good. Free for basic editing on phones |
| Pages on iPhone | Fine if you start blank and keep one column |
| Design apps with visual templates | Risky. Often two columns, icons, skill bars. Test before sending |
| Notes app exported or printed to PDF | Last resort. Little control over layout |
| Screenshot or photo of a resume | Never. Contains no readable text |
Get the content right before you worry about the app
My one opinion here: the app matters far less than what you type into it. A plain resume with numbers in the bullets, made in Google Docs on a budget phone, beats a beautiful template with “responsible for” in every line. And no tool fixes weak content. If you later use something like ApplyCove to apply at volume, it submits your profile as it is. More applications of a weak resume is just faster rejection. Spend your phone time on the bullets.
When a phone is the wrong tool
- Your resume runs past one page. Checking page breaks on a phone is painful. Borrow a laptop for the final pass.
- You are importing an old Word file with complex formatting. Tables and columns tend to break on mobile. Retype it into a blank document instead.
- The application needs a cover letter, portfolio and resume together. Juggling three files on a phone invites the wrong attachment going to the wrong company.
- You need to tailor ten versions for ten roles. Do it once on a bigger screen and keep the versions in a folder.
Rule of thumb
Content in notes first, blank document second, one column, standard headings, PDF out, long-press to test, proper filename, upload the PDF itself. That gets you a resume that reads cleanly anywhere, made entirely on a phone.
When you want the formatting handled for you, paste the same content into the free resume builder, on your phone or a laptop. It has 17 templates (14 single-column and ATS-safe), a live 0-100 completeness score that flags weak bullets, and a clean PDF export with no watermark, so the next version takes minutes instead of an evening of thumb-typing. If you are a fresher still deciding what goes on the page at all, resume format for freshers has the full section order.
