How to Check ATS Score of Your Resume (Free, in 2 Minutes)

To check your resume’s ATS score, upload a text-based PDF to a free ATS checker, read the score out of 100, and fix whatever it flags. It takes about two minutes. Here is the exact process, plus the checkers to avoid and what to do once you have your number.

I spent my own job hunt pasting the same resume into different forms and wondering why nothing landed. Part of the answer was a resume that looked fine to me and parsed badly for the software. Checking it would have taken two minutes. Here is how to do that.

The fastest way: a free ATS checker

The quickest check is to run your resume through a tool that reads it the way an applicant tracking system does and scores it. Our free ATS resume checker reads a PDF in your browser, scores it out of 100, and lists exactly what to fix. No login, no card, and the file is not stored. That is the two-minute version, and for most people it is all they need.

Step by step

1. Export a real text-based PDF. Not a scan, not a photo, not an image. Quick test: open the file and try to select your name with the cursor. If it highlights, you are fine. If nothing selects, the checker (and the ATS) sees a blank page.

2. Upload it to the checker. Drop the PDF into the ATS checker. It pulls the text and scores it in seconds.

3. Read the score and the checklist. You get a number out of 100 and a list of what passed and what to fix. If you are not sure what the number means, I broke down the bands in what is a good ATS score.

4. Fix the flagged items. The usual ones: date every role, add numbers to your bullet points, replace “responsible for” with a strong verb, list at least three of the skills the job asks for, and drop two-column templates or graphics that scramble parsing.

5. Re-check, then match to the job. Upload the fixed version to confirm the score moved. Then paste a specific job description into the job-match score (free account) to see which of that role’s keywords you are still missing.

What your score means once you have it

Aim for roughly 80 out of 100. That is the range where a resume parses cleanly and carries what recruiters search for. Below 60, something is usually breaking, most often a two-column template or an image PDF. Above 90, you are into diminishing returns: stop polishing and start applying. The score measures readability and completeness, not whether you fit the role, so do not chase a perfect 100.

Fake checkers to avoid

Not every “free” ATS checker is worth your time. Skip any tool that:

  • Makes you create an account or pay before it shows the score.
  • Asks for your phone number to “send the report”, then floods it.
  • Returns a vague grade with no specific fixes, usually a lead magnet for a paid rewrite service.

A checker that hides the score behind a signup is selling you something, not scoring your resume.

A real checker shows you the number and the fixes on the spot. Ours does, and it reads the file in your browser rather than uploading and keeping it.

After you pass: the part that actually gets callbacks

A clean resume is step one. If the checker flags your skills section, the fix is usually vocabulary rather than formatting: the ATS keywords list by role has the terms recruiters actually filter on for each family, and the method for cutting it down to your ten.

After that, the lever that moves callbacks, especially if you are a fresher with no experience edge to spend, is reaching enough of the right openings before they close. A perfect resume sent to five jobs loses to a good one sent to eighty. If you are starting from a blank page, our free resume builder exports clean, ATS-friendly PDFs by default, so you skip most of the fixing.

Rule of thumb

Check it once, fix what it flags, get to about 80, and move on. Two minutes on a checker beats a third evening reformatting, and it beats sending an unreadable resume to eighty jobs and wondering why nobody called.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my resume for ATS? +

Upload a text-based PDF of your resume to a free ATS checker. It reads the text, scores how cleanly your resume parses and how complete it is out of 100, and lists what to fix. Our checker does this with no login and no card, and it reads the file in your browser rather than storing it.

How can I check my ATS score for free? +

Use a free ATS resume checker like ours. You upload your PDF, get a score out of 100 and a fix checklist in seconds, and you do not need to sign up or pay. Be wary of tools that force an email or a payment before showing the score.

Can I check my resume ATS score online? +

Yes. Online ATS checkers read your resume text and score it in the browser. The good ones show the score and the specific fixes immediately. Avoid any that require you to create an account or pay just to see the number.

Is there a truly free ATS resume checker? +

Yes. ApplyCove's ATS resume checker is free with no login and no card, and it reads your PDF in the browser without storing the file. The separate job-match score, where you paste a specific job description and see the keywords you are missing, needs only a free account.

How do I check if my resume is ATS-friendly? +

Two quick tests. First, open your PDF and try to select your name with the cursor: if it highlights as text, an ATS can read it; if nothing selects, it is an image and will parse as blank. Second, run it through a free ATS checker for a score and a fix list. Then apply the fixes and re-check.
